How to start a career in Permanent Make Up

With only 17% of people claiming to love their job, there’s never been a better time to look for a new career. If you’re passionate about changing people’s lives and self-confidence with the power of permanent makeup, a career as a permanent makeup artist could be just the change you need.

Alongside many other benefits, a career in permanent makeup offers something new every day, whether that’s a new challenge, a new look for a client, or a new story of how your artistry has changed somebody’s self-image for the better.

Wondering where to start? We’ve got you covered, with our comprehensive guide to starting a career as a PMU artist.

What is permanent makeup?

If you’re new to the world of permanent makeup, here’s what you need to know before considering a career in it. Permanent makeup is a cosmetic treatment that uses tattooing to produce results that resemble genuine, natural makeup.

Permanent makeup can be used for eyeliner and lipstick, but the most popular form of permanent makeup is eyebrows. From those of us who over-plucked our eyebrows as teenagers (guilty!) to people who don’t want the hassle of applying makeup every day, permanent eyebrow makeup can provide a natural-looking, perfect finish for everyone.

Permanent eyebrow makeup is also commonly used by those suffering from alopecia or eyebrow-hair loss since it replicates the look of natural eyebrows.

How long permanent makeup lasts depends on various factors, including exposure to sunlight, the pigment used, and the individual’s skin characteristics.

How to become a permanent makeup artist?

Becoming a permanent makeup artist is an excellent way to make a living while helping others be their best selves. Many permanent makeup artists are self-employed, so if you’ve always dreamt of being your own boss, this career is ideal.

Successful permanent makeup artists with an excellent reputation and portfolio of work have been known to make upwards of six figures, so making a lucrative career is definitely possible for any aspiring PMU artist.

HERE'S HOW TO START A CAREER IN PERMANENT MAKE UP

Attend a permanent makeup training course

The first step to becoming a permanent makeup artist is refining your skills and gathering knowledge through a training course from a permanent makeup academy. You can specialise in just one type of permanent makeup, such as brows, or become a generalist who can perform various different treatments.

Here at Bela Flor, I’ve poured my years of experience and expertise into training courses that will transform even beginners into the most confident version of themselves, with the knowledge needed for a successful career in permanent makeup artistry. Find out more about the courses I offer and how to sign up.

Apply for a license

Since the art of permanent makeup is technically tattooing, you’ll need a license from your local council. You’ll only be allowed to work if you’re compliant with regulations.

The council will request documentation to prove that you’re able to carry out your treatments, and they may even inspect the premises you’ll be using to make sure it meets their criteria.

Once you’ve been approved, you’re ready to launch your business.

Practise on models

Ever heard the phrase ‘practice makes perfect’? It exists for a reason. The more you practise your craft, the better you’ll be. Before you move to practising on people, you can even start on materials such as banana skins!

It can be nerve-wracking to practise on your first few clients, so start by using friends, family members, or professional models. Not only will you refine your craft, but you’ll also have some gorgeous before and after shots for your website and social media pages.

Launch your business

Now you’re qualified, licensed, and have a portfolio full of examples of your work, you’re ready to start your dream career. You can either find a permanent makeup artist job with an existing salon or start your own business as a self-employed freelancer.

If you choose to do the latter, you’ll need to either hire out space for a studio, or host clients at a designated space in your own home. Once you’ve sorted your location, find your customers by launching your own website and social media page. With 55% of consumers finding new brands on social media, you’re sure to find some new customers by filling your Instagram page with photos of your best work.

The bottom line

A career as a permanent makeup artist can be fulfilling, lucrative, and offer a level of freedom you just don’t get with other careers. To start your journey today, check out one of our expert permanent makeup training courses. Your dream career awaits.
